Happy May Day!

Wednesday, May 1st, 2013

Although you might not stroll down the street wishing passerby’s a happy May Day, today is indeed a very interesting holiday! Beginning in pre-Christian eras, May 1st was acknowledged as the first day of Summer while Feburary 1st was the first day of Spring. In pagan tradition, the day was spent doing a dance around the May pole and crowning a ‘Queen of May’.  In Catholic tradition, May was observed as Mary’s month and was dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

While beginning in Europe, May Day was observed in the United States until around the time of the Cold War by leaving “May Baskets” on neighbors doorsteps.  May Baskets were baskets of flowers and treats which the neighbor would drop on another neighbors doorstep, trying to hide before they came to the door. If the recipient caught the May Basket giver, it was tradition to kiss!

Today it would seem highly unusual to chase after your neighbor with puckered lips after they dropped off a basket of flowers on your doorstep, but it’s always good to acknowledge holidays of yore.  A great and modern way to celebrate May Day is to drop off a bouquet on a friends doorstep – they’ll appreciate it and hopefully carryout the tradition! If not May Day, celebrate the real first month of Spring by filling your home with fresh flowers.

Wedding Flowers

Friday, March 15th, 2013

Planning a wedding can be stressful.  There is a lot to think about regarding decor, venue, wedding party, groom choice, the list goes on.  Our experience at Calyx Flowers has really shown us that once you figure out what type of floral motif you want on your big day, the rest falls into place easily.  That might sound silly and expected coming from a floral company, but flowers are found all over weddings – not just in centerpieces on the tables.  In the bride’s bouquet, the bridesmaids’ bouquets, the groom’s lapel, on the bride’s dress, in the bride’s hair, along the aisle, in a flower girl’s basket, on the alter, in the chuppa, on the cake, on the tables, during cocktail hour, hanging from tents and ceilings  on the back of chairs, and really, any place you can think.  Weddings really are floral events.

So, once you figure out what type of floral designs you’re interested in, the rest of the planning should be a piece of cake. Hydrangeas, Peonies, Roses, and Lily of the Valley are typically popular choices for Weddings – colors are generally soft, romantic, and feminine.  Calla Lilies also make for beautiful bouquets or centerpieces.  Some brides opt for something more dramatic, choosing a pallet of dark reds to accent the whites and creams found elsewhere in the decor.  Do you want your centerpieces to make a bold statement or softly cascade across the tables?  You want your wedding to be representative of you and your style, so think about what colors you gravitate towards in your daily life.  Do you wear red lipstick?  Maybe maroon or red hues peppered in your centerpieces, bridesmaid decor, and bridal bouquet would suit your fancy.  Do you wear a lot of black?  Black vases are a chic and classic wedding staple.  Are you more of a chapstick and jeans girl? If that’s the case, perhaps a rustic wedding with lavender and taupe tones would be right for you.  Did you grow up in polos and spend summers at the country club?  Navy blues with white Calla Lilies are an elegant choice for a tasteful upscale wedding.

The Calyx Flowers team took the time to put together a Pinterest board of wedding flowers that inspire us.  Although we find it’s best not to replicate someone else’s wedding, it’s certainly encouraged to find inspiration from other peoples beautiful and happy events. We invite you to take a look at the board and let us know what you think!  Weddings are joyous events, so no need to stress, start with the flowers and let the rest unfold.

Party Flowers

Friday, March 8th, 2013

Decorating for a party can be overwhelming.  However, the classic and timeless solution to all party decor is flowers.  Let the flowers set the mood and tone for you and your guests.  Recently, one of our very own Calyx employees went to a birthday party for her mother with a Downton Abbey theme.  For those of you unfamiliar with the popular Masterpiece PBS show, it is set in an aristocratic English household on the cusp of WWI and decadence rules the roost.  The whole show is aesthetically beautiful, from the costumes to the home it’s set in to the gorgeous flowers that pour over the tables at every meal.

The party was minimally decorated, except for the flowers.  The flowers, quite literally, ran the night – they set the perfect theme and enchanted the guests from cocktail hour through dinner.  Peonies definitely stole the show but all the flowers complimented each other beautifully in a colorful display of birthday festivity.  Mark Hall Flowers, a prominent Boston floral design studio, outdid themselves in preparation, decoration, and execution.

The lesson here is flowers are a powerful decorating tool, be it for a party or for your every day home.  Little else needs to go into preparation when you allow flowers to set the mood for your guests.  Having a theme party?  Choose arrangements you feel speak to the era or theme so all else you need is a fresh table cloth!  Having a birthday party?  Find brightly colored flowers to spread cheer and celebration across your home.  Having a garden party?  Find beautiful Peony bouquets and classic lush flowers to bunch around in timeless vases  for your guests to admire.

Flowers are powerful works of art, making the home more enjoyable and festive when they’re around.  Next time you’re having a party, think of the endless floral possibilities to help shape and execute a theme your guests will gush about for years to come!

Love getting ready for Valentine’s Day

Friday, February 1st, 2013

When everyone at Calyx Flowers was in planning mode for Valentine’s Day 2013, we thought this would be the year where we offer roses in all colors and sizes.  After all not every girl, woman or even guy is wanting your typical bouquet of red roses. Now don’t get us wrong. We absolutely adore red roses and have lots of options highlighting the different varieties of red that scream “I love you!” However we wanted a collection of bouquets so encompassing that our flower lovers would take notice.

“When you’re designing with roses, it doesn’t take much to create an incredibly beautiful bouquet. What does take a lot is how to give the roses a platform to be dramatic and stand out”, says Calyx designer, Brittany Streufert. In addition to creating the bouquets that grace and  our catalog, the flower expert searches high and low for luxurious vessels and amazing vases that work with the different floral components she selects.

“Valentine’s Day is a day when you want to make your love stand out. You want the recipient to say, ‘This is the most unbelievable bouquet I have ever received.’ With our Valentine’s Day 2013 collection of roses I think we have the right product selection to touch the hearts of many.”

We would love to hear from you and your thoughts on our Valentine’s Day bouquets.

Beat the Winter Blues

Monday, January 28th, 2013

Winter can be a difficult time of year.  Everything is covered in ice, most days are grey, nothing is blooming except cabin fever, and you forget what feeling hot is like.  You spend most of your time indoors catching up on tv and books itching for the warmth of the sun.  It’s easy to slip into a winter funk.  We’ve all been there.

But, being inside all the time does not mean you have to surrender to days feeling down.  Spruce up the place you spend your time in – your home!  Take pride in your winter hibernation by making your home beautiful inside and out.  A bouquet or a centerpiece can make a big difference in a room and in a day!  Maybe send one to a friend who you know has been feeling beat down by winter.  Once your environment is cheerier, you’ll be able to enjoy being stuck inside!  Curl up with a book and a cup or tea or plan a fun craft project for the kids to do after school.  Enjoy the beauty of your home and all the warmth it provides.

Monday, October 15th, 2012

Whether it’s the crunch of newly fallen leaves beneath your feet or the smell of apple cider in the air, autumn’s unique qualities tend to elicit all sorts of sentiments from us.  It’s the seasons changing, another year passed, and more things to be thankful for.  Fall certainly is beautiful in more way than one, but the aesthetic glow around September and October is something really extraordinary.  At Calyx, it’s important for us to create bouquets that mimic and emphasize the natural beauty that’s happening all around us.

So, we’d like to ask our customers, what makes fall special to you?  Is it the smell in the air or the color in the trees?  Is it the excitement of the year to come or pride in what last year accomplished?  Let us know so we can encompass all that makes Fall so amazing into our bouquets and arrangements.  Giving a floral reminder of why you love Fall to someone you love is a very special gift, indeed.

Candy Stripes Bouquet

Candy Stripes Bouquet

The Spring season is a time of rebirth and growth so we wanted to bring to life a new colorful, happy bouquet. One that would make a statement. One that conveyed cheer and could be sent for a variety of gift giving reasons. And finally, one that would look great in your home if you ordered it for yourself. The result is is our new Candy Stripes Bouquet that we definitely think fits the bill.

The hand painted ceramic vase from Portugal is filled with a colorful palette of flowers that arrive in bud and bloom and come to life right before your very eyes. It has a sweet and spicy fragrance from the mulit-blossomed stock. The Asiatic lilies are magnificent when in full blossom. And of course, the roses are quite lovely in pastel pink and lavender.

Candy Stripes Bouquet is wonderful because it’s appealing to a wide age group and it’s a great choice for a variety of flower sending occasions. Think Easter, Mother’s Day, birthdays and our favorite, just because.
