Atlanta Gift Show – Southern Shopping

AmericasMart in downtown Atlanta, Georgia

The “High Design” Floor

Well I have wrapped up another successful buying and sourcing trip to AmericasMart in Atlanta where lots of great products were found. I saw some wonderful showrooms filled with designer vases and cachepots that I know will look absolutely exquisite when paired with an exclusive Calyx “look.”

The show was definitely busier this time than it has been the past five seasons. Hopefully it is a good indicator that the retail economy is on an upswing.

Bright & colorful creations at the Fringe Studio showroom

The color palette was across the board at the show. Blues are definitely trending but there was not a dominant color theme in the showrooms as I walked the floor after floor. There’s still a lot of sparkle and bling out there as well as an “earthy” feel to many products so it really runs the gamut. Holiday patterns and tones were vivid and strong.

On Friday, the temporaries open and I find myself swept away by the offerings in the High Design section. I also love to walk the Gourmet floor and taste the many samples the different vendors offer. This is how we were introduced to our current truffles and carmel supplier, Mary Ann’s Chocolates. One bite was pure bliss!

I look forward to the next show in 2014. I’ll catch the MARTA once again and head to downtown Atlanta, ready for more treasure hunting.

The Queen’s Honey Collection

CHECK OUT The Queen’s Honey Collection by Pre de Provence we debuted in April at CalyxFlowers.com. I will tell you that I am very picky with my bath products because I am so sensitive to fragrances. However, this collection met the mark and then exceeded it with these three products.

First, I’m already out of the Queen’s Honey Butter. It’s touted as being harvested from the honey bees that pollinate the Provencal lavender in France. “Uh-oh”, I thought initially as I love the smell of lavender but cannot have it anywhere near me for a long time much less on my skin.  I tried it out after a morning shower and thought it to be refreshing on my skin, the fragrance was light and I smelled more honey than lavender. I figured in the next hour I would know and I’m excited to report that a migraine headache never came.

I’ve used the butter now for over two months daily and have grown to love it and my skin loves it as well. I find the fragrance to be quite comforting but best of all not overpowering. The Honey Shea Butter Soap is much the same. You can almost feel it nourishing your skin. And finally, the Body Scrub exfoliant does its job with large crystals to slough away dead skin but not leave you feeling too oily. It reminded me of honeycomb when I opened the jar.

The Queen’s Honey Scrub…Looks like honey!

Needless to say, I am very impressed with the quality and my overall use of the collection. I can certainly understand why it won “Best New Product” at the 2012 New York Gift Show. It has my stamp of approval.

Happy Summer! What we love…

Monday, June 24th, 2013

Well, Flower Lovers, it’s officially Summer!  Here in Vermont, it seemed like a long road to get to the season of beach days and cookouts but it’s finally here.  We have the windows open and the sweet smells of the gardens wafting into our office – something in the air definitely changed and it is Summer!

We would like to know what is your favorite thing about summer? Is it the beach?  Is it having the kids home from school?  Is it the smell of sunscreen or perhaps the taste of fresh watermelon?  Let us know!  Also, what is your favorite summer bouquet?  If you had your choice what fresh flowers would you buy at the farmers market?  Do you prefer a DIY bouquet or one perfectly designed for you? At Calyx, we like to know what our customers like so that we can be inspired to create bouquets we know everyone will love!

This summer, we have several floral obsessions.  For the Fourth of July, we’re going gaga for the All American Orchid Bouquet.  We can see it on a beach wood table outside near sand dunes, the ocean within eyesight, adding a pop of color to a 4th of July picnic. It says ‘Cape Cod’ with a pinch of fun and a whole lot of class. We also can’t seem to get over Blue Heaven Hydrangeas – they’re perfect in a window in a cottage near the shore or on a bedside table so the first thing you see in the morning are these fresh and gorgeous flowers.   Mango Delight Callas in our funky bubble glass vase are the perfect statement to put on a dinner table for a summer eve’s dinner party where your guests eat at dusk and spend the rest of the night dancing beneath the stars.  The Calyx Enchantment Bouquet makes us think of hot summer days in the country, picking strawberries and making pies!  Lastly, we can’t get enough of Jewel Orchids.  These tropical and exotic beauties make us want to go for a swim in a clear pool with a pina colada in our hand!

OK, so now we’ve shared ours – it’s only fair for you to share yours!  Tell us what summer flowers you’re mooning over and we’d love to use your ideas!

Happy Summer to our Flower Lovers!

Floral Fashion at its Finest

Friday, June 7th, 2013

The stunning Sonam Kapoor took our breathe away when she appeared on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival in this fabulous floral frock. Designed by Dolce & Gabbana the oversized floral pattern was not only eye-catchingly vivid but oh-so dramatic.  Kapoor wore the strapless floral design to the premiere of ‘Jeune & Jolie’.  In the Calyx opinion, it was the perfect red carpet look.

We’ve pinned this and other fancy floral fashions to our Flower Fashions We Love board on Pinterest. We invite you to check it out today. Let us know what you think!

Beautiful Flowers!

Monday, June 3rd, 2013

Hi Flower Lovers! We wrapped up our Fall 2013 photo shoot and after the last shot was taken, we had some fun putting together beautiful arrangements to share with you, our blog followers.  Here at Calyx, we love flowers and any excuse to play with them is a real treat.

The bouquet shown above is simple yet ever so appealing. This beautiful bouquet is perfect for a guestroom or a bathroom.  The container is a French-style bath jar, easily found in a powder room or a home goods type retailer.  It’s always fun to find unconventional vases around the house that will make for for an eye-catching arrangement.

The bouquet shown below is a great example of how to display flowers in a charming and rustic way.  Leaving flowers out around the home in baskets is a wonderful way to embrace the summer and show off your inner country goddess.  We chose yellow roses and Telstar Iris but the sky is the limit for this fun display!  Using fresh wild flowers is another great option, this could also make a great housewarming gift for a summer move in!

The final bouquet shown below is a personal favorite.  The medley of bright colors paired with a simple brown wooden box is chic, fun, and charming.  This bouquet looks like it belongs on a dinner table outside in Nantucket, late Summer or early Fall.  When arranging flowers, the most important thing to remember is to have fun! There is no bad arrangement, pick your favorite flowers and find a creative and free form way to bring them together. Putting flowers together is a way for you to be the artist and display your creations to all those you love.  Take tips from us, get out in the garden, and put something beautiful and creative together for your dinner table!

Memorial Day

Wednesday, May 22nd, 2013

Memorial Day makes us think of hot dogs on the grill, sparklers in the air, and children running barefoot through front lawns.  It’s great to enjoy this holiday with friends and family but also important to remember why we celebrate it in the first place.   The fallen men and women who have protected this country are the reasons we enjoy Memorial Day and our freedom everyday.  If there is a someone you know who has died during service, send their family a bouquet in the soldiers memory.  At least, send your love and gratitude for our country’s heroes to whom we owe so much.

Happy May Day!

Wednesday, May 1st, 2013

Although you might not stroll down the street wishing passerby’s a happy May Day, today is indeed a very interesting holiday! Beginning in pre-Christian eras, May 1st was acknowledged as the first day of Summer while Feburary 1st was the first day of Spring. In pagan tradition, the day was spent doing a dance around the May pole and crowning a ‘Queen of May’.  In Catholic tradition, May was observed as Mary’s month and was dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

While beginning in Europe, May Day was observed in the United States until around the time of the Cold War by leaving “May Baskets” on neighbors doorsteps.  May Baskets were baskets of flowers and treats which the neighbor would drop on another neighbors doorstep, trying to hide before they came to the door. If the recipient caught the May Basket giver, it was tradition to kiss!

Today it would seem highly unusual to chase after your neighbor with puckered lips after they dropped off a basket of flowers on your doorstep, but it’s always good to acknowledge holidays of yore.  A great and modern way to celebrate May Day is to drop off a bouquet on a friends doorstep – they’ll appreciate it and hopefully carryout the tradition! If not May Day, celebrate the real first month of Spring by filling your home with fresh flowers.

Spring is Almost Here! Wait, is it?

Tuesday, March 19th, 2013

The first day of Spring is Wednesday, March 20th, which is right around the corner!  However, if you live in the Northeast you’ll know that the conditions are anything but Springlike – there’s a huge snowstorm coming our way so most of us will spend the first day of Spring shoveling our driveways or snowed in.  It doesn’t seem like we’ll be celebrating Wednesday by getting out into our gardens, but that doesn’t mean we can’t bring flowers into our home.

Even if the weather is less than quintessential spring (we DO expect the snow to melt soon though Mother Nature, we’d like singing bluebirds and blooming forsythia at your earliest convenience.  Some of us have long awaited picnic plans to execute and have just about had it with heavy down jackets), we can still bring Spring inside!  Calyx has a Spring Collection that reminds us Easter is on the way, and Summer is not far behind it. All About Spring Bouquet is perfect to brighten your home and Powder Pink Peony Bouquet looks great in a window – be it snow or shine.

So, let’s encourage the weather to get warmer by bringing Spring inside our homes – hopefully the outdoors will want to catch up and bloom soon!

Party Flowers

Friday, March 8th, 2013

Decorating for a party can be overwhelming.  However, the classic and timeless solution to all party decor is flowers.  Let the flowers set the mood and tone for you and your guests.  Recently, one of our very own Calyx employees went to a birthday party for her mother with a Downton Abbey theme.  For those of you unfamiliar with the popular Masterpiece PBS show, it is set in an aristocratic English household on the cusp of WWI and decadence rules the roost.  The whole show is aesthetically beautiful, from the costumes to the home it’s set in to the gorgeous flowers that pour over the tables at every meal.

The party was minimally decorated, except for the flowers.  The flowers, quite literally, ran the night – they set the perfect theme and enchanted the guests from cocktail hour through dinner.  Peonies definitely stole the show but all the flowers complimented each other beautifully in a colorful display of birthday festivity.  Mark Hall Flowers, a prominent Boston floral design studio, outdid themselves in preparation, decoration, and execution.

The lesson here is flowers are a powerful decorating tool, be it for a party or for your every day home.  Little else needs to go into preparation when you allow flowers to set the mood for your guests.  Having a theme party?  Choose arrangements you feel speak to the era or theme so all else you need is a fresh table cloth!  Having a birthday party?  Find brightly colored flowers to spread cheer and celebration across your home.  Having a garden party?  Find beautiful Peony bouquets and classic lush flowers to bunch around in timeless vases  for your guests to admire.

Flowers are powerful works of art, making the home more enjoyable and festive when they’re around.  Next time you’re having a party, think of the endless floral possibilities to help shape and execute a theme your guests will gush about for years to come!
