Thistle Flowers

The national emblem of Scotland and a symbol of nobility, thistle is indeed unique and adds quite a lot of personality and texture to bouquets. It’s interesting purple-blue color allows it to make a statement regardless of its surroundings. We’ve combined this unique, prickly plant’s branches in our new Roses & Thistle Bouquet.  It’s a brand new way to say “I love you” anytime of the year.

Flower Inspired Gifts: Egyptian Jasmine

November 7th, 2013

Love flowers but the person you would love to send a big, gorgeous bouquet to doesn’t seem to be enthralled by fresh flowers? It’s hard for us to imagine such a scenario, but we’ve been assured it happens. Thus we’ve ventured out to find unique gifts that are flower inspired! Your recipient gets a naturally beautiful present and you’re still adding the personal touch of flowers to the special occasion.

This fall season we introduced the Egyptian Jasmine Candle & Soap Gift Set from k. hall designs at CalyxFlowers.com. We love everything that comes from Kelly Hall-Barr and John Barr. This husband and wife team produces unbelievably great bath, body and home care products from their factory in Brentwood, Missouri. We fell in love with their aromatic candles and soaps.

Love fragrance? Egyptian Jasmine has a very sensual scent  The soap and candle are made with rare, absolute jasmine oil which gives it long-lasting power. For a final touch of luxury, the gift set arrives in a fabulous keepsake satin hatbox. It makes for an interesting, long-lasting, floral-inspired delivery!

Decorating with our new and cheerfully gorgeous Pumpkin Sunflowers

Flowers in the home always make a difference, especially during the holidays when it feels like there’s a non-stop flow of family and friends in and out the door. We’ve designed a new sunflower look that will make bold and cheerful statement when on display. Sunflowers always make the perfect complement to Thanksgiving and fall decor and our Pumpkin Sunflowers are no exception. The bouquet includes fourteen sunflowers along with a gathering of feathery yellow solidago.

Cut the stems short and style them in your favorite container or if you’re looking for the right touch of Thanksgiving for the tabletop we love them arranged in our cute pumpkin vessels. Pumpkin Sunflowers are now available at CalyxFlowers.com and can be purchased as an individual bouquet or with a set of two pumpkin vases.

It’s National Boss Day!

October 16th, 2013

Remember it’s National Boss Day where we take the opportunity to show your boss how much you appreciate them. So where did this holiday originate? It dates back to 1958 when a woman named Patricia Haroski who was a secretary in Deerfield, Illinois organized a special day in honor of her white-collar father, who helped all of his children with good advice throughout their careers.

A mere four years later, National Boss Day was backed by Illinois Governor Otto Kerner. He officially proclaimed the day in 1962. National Boss Day quickly gained favor across the country and is now even observed in England, Australia and South Africa.

Take the time to acknowledge your boss today. I can’t believe it but I just received a text from a former employee wishing me a “Happy Boss’s Day”. It meant alot.

Floral Inspiration with Single Stem Blooms

September 12th, 2013

If you look around your home you’re sure to find lots of glassware, small bud vases or empty yet decorative bottles that can serve as the perfect vessel for a single flower stem. I made a quick trip around our photo studio and gathered a few interesting ones for my display.  When clustered together the look is gorgeous and I’ve only used 7 stems. (Left to right: Babe orange spray roses, pink phalaenopsis orchid, blue hydrangea, Hot Princess pink rose, yellow alstroemeria)

The look is is casual and airy and will look great in a home’s entryway or on your kitchen table. Creating this multi-blossomed display is not only super easy, but is very inexpensive. In fact, if you’re planning an event or party use any left over or broken stems for this project. You can make the look more formal by utilizing silver vases or mercury glass bottles. I’ve even added short blooms to interesting votive candleholders.

Have fun with it and let the flowers and your vessels provide the inspiration!

National Grandparents Day is Approaching!

August 28th, 2013

Happy Monday Flower Lovers!

As you may or may not know, National Grandparents Day is on September 8th.  That means it’s time to start preparing to show your love for the most loving and comforting people!  If you can’t be with your grandparents, send a beautiful bouquet from Calyx Flowers like the Lavender Love Bouquet (shown) Summer Melody Bouquet or Delphiniums & Lilies.  They’ll be sure to feel the love, regardless of how far apart you are.

If you’ve lost grandparents along the way, send flowers to your parents or your spouses parents!  All parents, grand and not, love flowers and love being appreciated even more.

Maybe your Grandmother made you homemade cookies or taught you how to play cards – say thank you with something beautiful!  And don’t forget Grandpa, all those games of catch and trips to the candy store certainly deserve to be rewarded.

Send a little love with Calyx and let the people in your life know how much you care.

Anthuriums!

August 15th, 2013

How much do you know about Anthuriums?  Well, let us fill you in!

Gorgeous Red Anthurium Plants

Pistachio Anthurium Bouquet

Common names for the Anthurium are Flamingo flower, Tail Flower, Oilcloth Flower, and Painters palette. Anthurium leaves are actually waxy bracts called ‘spaths’ and are heart shaped.  While most known for being red, Anthuriums come in burgundy, pink, hot pink, dark pink, red-orange, orange, salmon, yellow, green, purple, cream, white, brown, and multi-colored!

These tropical flowers can last in your home from 8 to 21 days.  Surprisingly, the longer the stem the longer the stem life.

Anthuriums really are a taste of the tropics – they are only native to tropical rain forests of Central and South America.

So, as the weather starts to cool down – bring a real piece of the tropics into your home with an Anthurium bouquet!  You’ll be able to tell all of your guests who comment how beautiful they are all of the fun facts you learned here!
