Happy Summer! What we love…

Monday, June 24th, 2013

Well, Flower Lovers, it’s officially Summer!  Here in Vermont, it seemed like a long road to get to the season of beach days and cookouts but it’s finally here.  We have the windows open and the sweet smells of the gardens wafting into our office – something in the air definitely changed and it is Summer!

We would like to know what is your favorite thing about summer? Is it the beach?  Is it having the kids home from school?  Is it the smell of sunscreen or perhaps the taste of fresh watermelon?  Let us know!  Also, what is your favorite summer bouquet?  If you had your choice what fresh flowers would you buy at the farmers market?  Do you prefer a DIY bouquet or one perfectly designed for you? At Calyx, we like to know what our customers like so that we can be inspired to create bouquets we know everyone will love!

This summer, we have several floral obsessions.  For the Fourth of July, we’re going gaga for the All American Orchid Bouquet.  We can see it on a beach wood table outside near sand dunes, the ocean within eyesight, adding a pop of color to a 4th of July picnic. It says ‘Cape Cod’ with a pinch of fun and a whole lot of class. We also can’t seem to get over Blue Heaven Hydrangeas – they’re perfect in a window in a cottage near the shore or on a bedside table so the first thing you see in the morning are these fresh and gorgeous flowers.   Mango Delight Callas in our funky bubble glass vase are the perfect statement to put on a dinner table for a summer eve’s dinner party where your guests eat at dusk and spend the rest of the night dancing beneath the stars.  The Calyx Enchantment Bouquet makes us think of hot summer days in the country, picking strawberries and making pies!  Lastly, we can’t get enough of Jewel Orchids.  These tropical and exotic beauties make us want to go for a swim in a clear pool with a pina colada in our hand!

OK, so now we’ve shared ours – it’s only fair for you to share yours!  Tell us what summer flowers you’re mooning over and we’d love to use your ideas!

Happy Summer to our Flower Lovers!

Emerald Orchids

Monday, March 11th, 2013

Don’t let your Irish pride end with the flag outside your home, show it with the beautiful Emerald Orchid Bouquet from Calyx Flowers.   The color is enhanced but there is nothing fake about the beauty of these gems.  Looking like a bouquet of shamrocks but holding tight to the majesty of orchids, the emerald bundle will no doubt surprise and delight guests and recipients - maybe it will even inspire a little luck of the Irish.

Emerald is not just festive this season, it’s also very chic.  Not only was Emerald named the Pantone 2013 Color of the Year but Calyx Flowers has found a way to infuse the luxurious hue to create the perfect St. Patrick’s Day bouquet.  Our Emerald Orchids is sure to make an elegant statement on March 17th as a gift or to decorate the home.  A holiday is a fun excuse to decorate and St. Patrick’s Day is the most fun holiday of all!

Party Flowers

Friday, March 8th, 2013

Decorating for a party can be overwhelming.  However, the classic and timeless solution to all party decor is flowers.  Let the flowers set the mood and tone for you and your guests.  Recently, one of our very own Calyx employees went to a birthday party for her mother with a Downton Abbey theme.  For those of you unfamiliar with the popular Masterpiece PBS show, it is set in an aristocratic English household on the cusp of WWI and decadence rules the roost.  The whole show is aesthetically beautiful, from the costumes to the home it’s set in to the gorgeous flowers that pour over the tables at every meal.

The party was minimally decorated, except for the flowers.  The flowers, quite literally, ran the night – they set the perfect theme and enchanted the guests from cocktail hour through dinner.  Peonies definitely stole the show but all the flowers complimented each other beautifully in a colorful display of birthday festivity.  Mark Hall Flowers, a prominent Boston floral design studio, outdid themselves in preparation, decoration, and execution.

The lesson here is flowers are a powerful decorating tool, be it for a party or for your every day home.  Little else needs to go into preparation when you allow flowers to set the mood for your guests.  Having a theme party?  Choose arrangements you feel speak to the era or theme so all else you need is a fresh table cloth!  Having a birthday party?  Find brightly colored flowers to spread cheer and celebration across your home.  Having a garden party?  Find beautiful Peony bouquets and classic lush flowers to bunch around in timeless vases  for your guests to admire.

Flowers are powerful works of art, making the home more enjoyable and festive when they’re around.  Next time you’re having a party, think of the endless floral possibilities to help shape and execute a theme your guests will gush about for years to come!

Beat the Winter Blues

Monday, January 28th, 2013

Winter can be a difficult time of year.  Everything is covered in ice, most days are grey, nothing is blooming except cabin fever, and you forget what feeling hot is like.  You spend most of your time indoors catching up on tv and books itching for the warmth of the sun.  It’s easy to slip into a winter funk.  We’ve all been there.

But, being inside all the time does not mean you have to surrender to days feeling down.  Spruce up the place you spend your time in – your home!  Take pride in your winter hibernation by making your home beautiful inside and out.  A bouquet or a centerpiece can make a big difference in a room and in a day!  Maybe send one to a friend who you know has been feeling beat down by winter.  Once your environment is cheerier, you’ll be able to enjoy being stuck inside!  Curl up with a book and a cup or tea or plan a fun craft project for the kids to do after school.  Enjoy the beauty of your home and all the warmth it provides.

Orchid Blaze Bouquet
Our October Cover Bouquet

For those of us who like to make a strong statement when sending flowers in a stylish fashion, fresh-cut orchids are the go-to blooms. This fall Calyx Flowers is showcasing a modern selection of orchids in a wide array of unusual varieties and autumn colors.

Orchid Blaze Bouquet  graces our October catalog cover. This beautiful bouquet is a combination of three different mokara varieties alongside striking tigertail arandas. Tropical ti leaves and curly willow provide a final touch. What’s great about our bouquets is that they are available to purchase many different ways. Customers can select the “shown” look which is the bouquet with the decorative vase that we show in our catalog or on the web site. Or you may want to just send the bouquet with a glass vase and we have that too. Have too many vases at home? Order just the bouquet. We try and accommodate everyone’s desires.

Fun Orchid Fact from one of my favorite books, “Easy Orchids” – Did you know that orchids have been known to drape themselves exotically in trees and rocks? They draw their nutrients from water that falls upon their roots and from decomposing organic matter that often builds up around the roots.
