Happy May Day!

Wednesday, May 1st, 2013

Although you might not stroll down the street wishing passerby’s a happy May Day, today is indeed a very interesting holiday! Beginning in pre-Christian eras, May 1st was acknowledged as the first day of Summer while Feburary 1st was the first day of Spring. In pagan tradition, the day was spent doing a dance around the May pole and crowning a ‘Queen of May’.  In Catholic tradition, May was observed as Mary’s month and was dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

While beginning in Europe, May Day was observed in the United States until around the time of the Cold War by leaving “May Baskets” on neighbors doorsteps.  May Baskets were baskets of flowers and treats which the neighbor would drop on another neighbors doorstep, trying to hide before they came to the door. If the recipient caught the May Basket giver, it was tradition to kiss!

Today it would seem highly unusual to chase after your neighbor with puckered lips after they dropped off a basket of flowers on your doorstep, but it’s always good to acknowledge holidays of yore.  A great and modern way to celebrate May Day is to drop off a bouquet on a friends doorstep – they’ll appreciate it and hopefully carryout the tradition! If not May Day, celebrate the real first month of Spring by filling your home with fresh flowers.

Beat the Winter Blues

Monday, January 28th, 2013

Winter can be a difficult time of year.  Everything is covered in ice, most days are grey, nothing is blooming except cabin fever, and you forget what feeling hot is like.  You spend most of your time indoors catching up on tv and books itching for the warmth of the sun.  It’s easy to slip into a winter funk.  We’ve all been there.

But, being inside all the time does not mean you have to surrender to days feeling down.  Spruce up the place you spend your time in – your home!  Take pride in your winter hibernation by making your home beautiful inside and out.  A bouquet or a centerpiece can make a big difference in a room and in a day!  Maybe send one to a friend who you know has been feeling beat down by winter.  Once your environment is cheerier, you’ll be able to enjoy being stuck inside!  Curl up with a book and a cup or tea or plan a fun craft project for the kids to do after school.  Enjoy the beauty of your home and all the warmth it provides.

The Best Flowers: Happy Easter at Calyx Flowers

Wednesday, March 28th, 2012
Bunny Calla Lily Plant
It’s a wonderful time of the year and the warmer winter most of us experienced has brought beautiful blooms to our gardens sooner than expected. Spring is here and Easter is right around the corner.

With the Easter holiday in mind we had to share this classic holiday look . We think everyone will love it. It’s the new Bunny Calla Lily Plant at CalyxFlowers.com and we’re giving  it “Best Flower” for the week. Don’t you just love a beautiful bunny rabbit? Aren’t calla lilies so intriguing? When we incorporated the two together it turned into a true celebration of Easter!

Although the “Easter Bunny” part of the holiday is separate from the Christian tradition of honoring the day Jesus Christ rose from the dead, we like that we’ve filled it with a calla lily. White callas are believed to be a symbol of Jesus’ Resurrection, as the shape of the blooms bear a resemblance of trumpets, and the trumpets stand for victory.

So there you have it. The bunny gets best flower. Happy Easter!

Sisters’ Day is August 1st.

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

With July almost behind us, I was flipping the calendar to see if there were any exciting activities in the month ahead. I noticed that the first Sunday in August is designated as Sister’s Day. So August 1, 2010 is officially the day to  celebrate being or having a sister. Surprise your sister this Sunday!

From HolidayInsights.com - Sisters are truly special and unique. Sure, we may argue and fight. But, when it comes right down to it, sisters are the best, the very best.  Celebrate Sister’s Day by spending time with your sister. Make it a special day in some way for you, and for her.

Would you like to send flowers to your sister? My recommendation is our colorful Summertime Roses.
