Happy Summer! What we love…

Monday, June 24th, 2013

Well, Flower Lovers, it’s officially Summer!  Here in Vermont, it seemed like a long road to get to the season of beach days and cookouts but it’s finally here.  We have the windows open and the sweet smells of the gardens wafting into our office – something in the air definitely changed and it is Summer!

We would like to know what is your favorite thing about summer? Is it the beach?  Is it having the kids home from school?  Is it the smell of sunscreen or perhaps the taste of fresh watermelon?  Let us know!  Also, what is your favorite summer bouquet?  If you had your choice what fresh flowers would you buy at the farmers market?  Do you prefer a DIY bouquet or one perfectly designed for you? At Calyx, we like to know what our customers like so that we can be inspired to create bouquets we know everyone will love!

This summer, we have several floral obsessions.  For the Fourth of July, we’re going gaga for the All American Orchid Bouquet.  We can see it on a beach wood table outside near sand dunes, the ocean within eyesight, adding a pop of color to a 4th of July picnic. It says ‘Cape Cod’ with a pinch of fun and a whole lot of class. We also can’t seem to get over Blue Heaven Hydrangeas – they’re perfect in a window in a cottage near the shore or on a bedside table so the first thing you see in the morning are these fresh and gorgeous flowers.   Mango Delight Callas in our funky bubble glass vase are the perfect statement to put on a dinner table for a summer eve’s dinner party where your guests eat at dusk and spend the rest of the night dancing beneath the stars.  The Calyx Enchantment Bouquet makes us think of hot summer days in the country, picking strawberries and making pies!  Lastly, we can’t get enough of Jewel Orchids.  These tropical and exotic beauties make us want to go for a swim in a clear pool with a pina colada in our hand!

OK, so now we’ve shared ours – it’s only fair for you to share yours!  Tell us what summer flowers you’re mooning over and we’d love to use your ideas!

Happy Summer to our Flower Lovers!

Party Flowers

Friday, March 8th, 2013

Decorating for a party can be overwhelming.  However, the classic and timeless solution to all party decor is flowers.  Let the flowers set the mood and tone for you and your guests.  Recently, one of our very own Calyx employees went to a birthday party for her mother with a Downton Abbey theme.  For those of you unfamiliar with the popular Masterpiece PBS show, it is set in an aristocratic English household on the cusp of WWI and decadence rules the roost.  The whole show is aesthetically beautiful, from the costumes to the home it’s set in to the gorgeous flowers that pour over the tables at every meal.

The party was minimally decorated, except for the flowers.  The flowers, quite literally, ran the night – they set the perfect theme and enchanted the guests from cocktail hour through dinner.  Peonies definitely stole the show but all the flowers complimented each other beautifully in a colorful display of birthday festivity.  Mark Hall Flowers, a prominent Boston floral design studio, outdid themselves in preparation, decoration, and execution.

The lesson here is flowers are a powerful decorating tool, be it for a party or for your every day home.  Little else needs to go into preparation when you allow flowers to set the mood for your guests.  Having a theme party?  Choose arrangements you feel speak to the era or theme so all else you need is a fresh table cloth!  Having a birthday party?  Find brightly colored flowers to spread cheer and celebration across your home.  Having a garden party?  Find beautiful Peony bouquets and classic lush flowers to bunch around in timeless vases  for your guests to admire.

Flowers are powerful works of art, making the home more enjoyable and festive when they’re around.  Next time you’re having a party, think of the endless floral possibilities to help shape and execute a theme your guests will gush about for years to come!

My Top 10 Favorite Summer Flowers

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

From the sassy hot pink of blooming roses to the silky orange blossoms of the hibiscus, there are so many picturesque flowers blooming during the summertime that it’s hard to pick just one favorite. So I’ve compiled my first “Top 10 Favorites” for all our flower lovers – I’m not saying these are my all-time favorites but they hold a special place in my heart during the summer season.

Each are offered by Calyx Flowers to send as a gift or for self-purchase. In no particular order I bring you…

  1. Island Orchids – from the viscaya shell vase to the exotic orchids I love putting these on display when company is over. Many floral conversations ensue.
  2. Pink Sorbonne Lilies – lilies last forever and these are no exception! The beautiful blooms captivate while their fragrance fills the room.
  3. Butterfly Gerbera Daisies – cheerful, colorful and always fun. You just can’t go wrong in displaying gerbs. Plus, our Lynn Chase “Butterfly Paradise” vase makes the day even brighter.
  4. Sunflower Sensation Bouquet – it’s a wonderful way to bring the outside sunshine inside.
  5. Fair Trade Pink Intuition Roses – such a unique rose with its two shades of pink on every petal, plus feel good about displaying them since you’re helping make a difference.
  6. Enchanting Lisianthus Bouquet – purple perfection! I love giving these as a hostess gift as they’re frilly, a little untamed and rich in color but best of all they are memorable.
  7. Wild Anthurium Plant – just try and tame this tropical delight. And you know everyone needs some sort of animal in the home. Why not a zebra?
  8. Blue Hydrangea Bouquet – always a favorite, always satisfying. I could stare at hydrangea for hours admiring all the little blooms that make up a single stem. Every time I walk by them I want to give them a little pinch.
  9. Sago Palm Bonsai – if you can’t be in the tropics simply bring them to you. Nothing says “Island Time” like this little feathery palm. Is it 5 o’clock yet?
  10. Hibiscus Plant – you know summer has arrived when the hibiscus are in bloom. It’s so much fun to watch them unfurl throughout the day in bright vivid colors. I always plant mine outside after I’ve enjoyed them indoors.

Monochromatic Mixtures

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

It’s no secret that our Calyx Flower Lovers love a bold monochromatic mixture of flowers so I couldn’t wait to tout our newest look – the Blue Hydrangea Bouquet. This is a dramatic combination of billowy blue hydrangeas paired with a similarly shaded blue crackle glass vase. I have no doubt its popularity will rise this summer. It’s clean, contemporary and tasteful when displayed in your home or sent to that of your special someone. Enjoy!

Indeed a monochromatic masterpiece!
