Thistle Flowers

The national emblem of Scotland and a symbol of nobility, thistle is indeed unique and adds quite a lot of personality and texture to bouquets. It’s interesting purple-blue color allows it to make a statement regardless of its surroundings. We’ve combined this unique, prickly plant’s branches in our new Roses & Thistle Bouquet.  It’s a brand new way to say “I love you” anytime of the year.

Happy Summer! What we love…

Monday, June 24th, 2013

Well, Flower Lovers, it’s officially Summer!  Here in Vermont, it seemed like a long road to get to the season of beach days and cookouts but it’s finally here.  We have the windows open and the sweet smells of the gardens wafting into our office – something in the air definitely changed and it is Summer!

We would like to know what is your favorite thing about summer? Is it the beach?  Is it having the kids home from school?  Is it the smell of sunscreen or perhaps the taste of fresh watermelon?  Let us know!  Also, what is your favorite summer bouquet?  If you had your choice what fresh flowers would you buy at the farmers market?  Do you prefer a DIY bouquet or one perfectly designed for you? At Calyx, we like to know what our customers like so that we can be inspired to create bouquets we know everyone will love!

This summer, we have several floral obsessions.  For the Fourth of July, we’re going gaga for the All American Orchid Bouquet.  We can see it on a beach wood table outside near sand dunes, the ocean within eyesight, adding a pop of color to a 4th of July picnic. It says ‘Cape Cod’ with a pinch of fun and a whole lot of class. We also can’t seem to get over Blue Heaven Hydrangeas – they’re perfect in a window in a cottage near the shore or on a bedside table so the first thing you see in the morning are these fresh and gorgeous flowers.   Mango Delight Callas in our funky bubble glass vase are the perfect statement to put on a dinner table for a summer eve’s dinner party where your guests eat at dusk and spend the rest of the night dancing beneath the stars.  The Calyx Enchantment Bouquet makes us think of hot summer days in the country, picking strawberries and making pies!  Lastly, we can’t get enough of Jewel Orchids.  These tropical and exotic beauties make us want to go for a swim in a clear pool with a pina colada in our hand!

OK, so now we’ve shared ours – it’s only fair for you to share yours!  Tell us what summer flowers you’re mooning over and we’d love to use your ideas!

Happy Summer to our Flower Lovers!

Happy May Day!

Wednesday, May 1st, 2013

Although you might not stroll down the street wishing passerby’s a happy May Day, today is indeed a very interesting holiday! Beginning in pre-Christian eras, May 1st was acknowledged as the first day of Summer while Feburary 1st was the first day of Spring. In pagan tradition, the day was spent doing a dance around the May pole and crowning a ‘Queen of May’.  In Catholic tradition, May was observed as Mary’s month and was dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

While beginning in Europe, May Day was observed in the United States until around the time of the Cold War by leaving “May Baskets” on neighbors doorsteps.  May Baskets were baskets of flowers and treats which the neighbor would drop on another neighbors doorstep, trying to hide before they came to the door. If the recipient caught the May Basket giver, it was tradition to kiss!

Today it would seem highly unusual to chase after your neighbor with puckered lips after they dropped off a basket of flowers on your doorstep, but it’s always good to acknowledge holidays of yore.  A great and modern way to celebrate May Day is to drop off a bouquet on a friends doorstep – they’ll appreciate it and hopefully carryout the tradition! If not May Day, celebrate the real first month of Spring by filling your home with fresh flowers.

Party Flowers

Friday, March 8th, 2013

Decorating for a party can be overwhelming.  However, the classic and timeless solution to all party decor is flowers.  Let the flowers set the mood and tone for you and your guests.  Recently, one of our very own Calyx employees went to a birthday party for her mother with a Downton Abbey theme.  For those of you unfamiliar with the popular Masterpiece PBS show, it is set in an aristocratic English household on the cusp of WWI and decadence rules the roost.  The whole show is aesthetically beautiful, from the costumes to the home it’s set in to the gorgeous flowers that pour over the tables at every meal.

The party was minimally decorated, except for the flowers.  The flowers, quite literally, ran the night – they set the perfect theme and enchanted the guests from cocktail hour through dinner.  Peonies definitely stole the show but all the flowers complimented each other beautifully in a colorful display of birthday festivity.  Mark Hall Flowers, a prominent Boston floral design studio, outdid themselves in preparation, decoration, and execution.

The lesson here is flowers are a powerful decorating tool, be it for a party or for your every day home.  Little else needs to go into preparation when you allow flowers to set the mood for your guests.  Having a theme party?  Choose arrangements you feel speak to the era or theme so all else you need is a fresh table cloth!  Having a birthday party?  Find brightly colored flowers to spread cheer and celebration across your home.  Having a garden party?  Find beautiful Peony bouquets and classic lush flowers to bunch around in timeless vases  for your guests to admire.

Flowers are powerful works of art, making the home more enjoyable and festive when they’re around.  Next time you’re having a party, think of the endless floral possibilities to help shape and execute a theme your guests will gush about for years to come!

How to send a Guy Flowers

Tuesday, February 12th, 2013

Roses take on a masculine look for the men in our zinc metal vase.

Love getting flowers from your guy at Valentine’s Day? Are you thinking how great it would be for him to have that same warm feeling of love and appreciation? But then are you doubting whether or not a guy really wants to get flowers? Is it “not manly” to be a guy and a recipient of a bouquet of roses? STOP right there…you don’t need permission!

The gift of roses or any other kind of flower or plant for that matter is a personal choice you’ve made especially for him and one that truly came from a good place in your heart. Sure there will always be some naysayer that says it’s not cool to get flowers from a “chick” but at the same time I know alot of women who have also made snide comments when someone around them receives a flower delivery. Could it be the green-eyed envy monster coming out?

When designing our Valentine’s Day collection this year, we thought about the idea of having one specific bouquet for HIM. The idea came full circle when we happened upon a very modern and masculine-looking vase.  Thus, Uniquely Him Roses was born. The vase itself is comprised of a cylinder glass insert that sits inside a wrapping of zinc metal. It’s industrial and interesting all at the same time. The classic bouquet of red roses looks right at home inside the vase. It’s appropriate for the boyfriend, the husband, the dad or even the grandfather. And if you send it to his workplace, it’s guaranteed to be a water cooler topic of conversation.

We hope this helps if you were thinking of ordering your guy Valentine flowers. We’re planning on making this bouquet available for all special occasions, year round. Dare to be different and do it. And please, tell us how it went as we would love to hear about it at Calyx Flowers.

Love getting ready for Valentine’s Day

Friday, February 1st, 2013

When everyone at Calyx Flowers was in planning mode for Valentine’s Day 2013, we thought this would be the year where we offer roses in all colors and sizes.  After all not every girl, woman or even guy is wanting your typical bouquet of red roses. Now don’t get us wrong. We absolutely adore red roses and have lots of options highlighting the different varieties of red that scream “I love you!” However we wanted a collection of bouquets so encompassing that our flower lovers would take notice.

“When you’re designing with roses, it doesn’t take much to create an incredibly beautiful bouquet. What does take a lot is how to give the roses a platform to be dramatic and stand out”, says Calyx designer, Brittany Streufert. In addition to creating the bouquets that grace CalyxFlowers.com and  our catalog, the flower expert searches high and low for luxurious vessels and amazing vases that work with the different floral components she selects.

“Valentine’s Day is a day when you want to make your love stand out. You want the recipient to say, ‘This is the most unbelievable bouquet I have ever received.’ With our Valentine’s Day 2013 collection of roses I think we have the right product selection to touch the hearts of many.”

We would love to hear from you and your thoughts on our Valentine’s Day bouquets.

Sister’s Day is Sunday!

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

This Sunday, August 7th, is Sister’s Day per http://www.holidayinsights.com/moreholidays/August/sistersday.htm. Never heard of this special day? Sister’s Day is celebrated the first Sunday in August each year. It’s a day that honors the special relationships between sisters and their unique bond whether by blood, marriage or adoption. There are sisters of many kind.

A close friend of mine recently approached me to ask for flower advice as she had three sisters and wanted to send each of them a fresh bouquet. It got me thinking about what I would send if I had a sister (happy to say I have two brothers). Since I wholeheartedly embrace color and love vibrant hues I immediately thought of the new Twist of Lime Bouquet. Even better….it had four different varieties which in fact could represent each sister in her family. The bouquet had an underlying meaning and would make a special gift. Consultation complete!
